Facts of Lice

Lice is a love bug. It spreads when you show affection toward others and transfers most often by direct head to head contact. Hugging, wrestling, cuddling, pictures and selfies! Lice do not jump, fly or swim. They have six legs and crawl from one hair strand to the next. Lice is a human parasite and cannot transfer to your pets. Lice does not discriminate, anyone can contract it regardless of your ethnicity. Lice are an opportunistic parasite, surviving only on the scalp and feed off your blood. Contracting head lice has absolutely nothing to do with personal hygiene or how clean your house is. Lice are actually more predisposed to prefer shiny, clean hair when looking for a human host.

The life cycle of head lice has three stages. Egg, nymph and adult. The adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed. They range from dark brown, to tan in color. If they've recently fed, they tend to turn reddish brown. Females are usually larger than males and can lay up to 8 eggs per day. Eggs are often confused with dandruff or built up hair products. Eggs are laid by the adult female and are super-glued to the hair shaft. The female louse lays her eggs within 6 mm of the scalp and needs the warmth from the scalp to hatch. Lice eggs are 0.8 mm by 0.3 mm, oval in shape and yellow to white in color. Eggs take about 6-9 days to hatch. Nymphs are baby lice, recently hatched. They are visually hard to see as they are the size of a pin head and live directly on the scalp. Nymphs become adults 18 days after hatching and can begin to mate and reproduce. The adult louse dies approximately 33 days after hatching and her baby nymphs grow to adults, repeating the life cycle of lice.

I had lice for the first time in my life a few months ago. It was awful!! I tried every lice treatment, prescriptions and nothing seemed to work. I have very long, thick hair and I had eggs all throughout my hair. When my mom and I found Savanna, she was an ANGEL!! She was so helpful and made such a stressful experience very enjoyable. She was so calm and sweet during our treatment and even provided snacks, water and my favorite shows! Thank god we found her! I have been lice free ever since . I will recommend Delaware Lice Clinic and Savanna to everyone I know!
